Wow! Found this post while Googling for a guide on "How to Extract the RFID chip out of a card" because in Melbourne (where I live), we're finally getting an RFID public transport system. And as a daily user, and a technical enthusiast, I of course was interested in making the card even smaller so I can stick it inside my watch or some other object.

But anyway, back on topic, nice blog (adds to RSS Reader). I personally think it's more likely your ATM card got demagnetised by an Octopus card reader and not the actual card itself. As you all know, Octopus works on the RFID system. Another application which implements RFID is store security. Dunno about HK, but in Australia, almost any store selling something decent will tag their expensive and easily stolen items with an RFID chip. Upon purchasing it, the cashier will deactivate the tag by waving it over a scanner. This system is most common in pharmacies, and I've noticed that the scanner at my local pharmacy has a sign that says "DO NOT WAVE CREDIT CARDS, OR MAGNETIC STRIPE OBJECTS OVER SCANNER" and a diagram.
So I presume it might kill the magnetic data on the card. Of course, Octopus and this RFID reader probably use different frequencies, and I would presume Octopus uses less frequency and therefore a lower chance of demagnetising your card (store security requires up to 2 metre wavelength, Octopus etc. barely needs 15 cm) but maybe a particular reader you used had a burst of power or something which killed your ATM card.
